EN23953 harmonised
We posted in our last newsletter that the new version of EN ISO 23953-2:2023 - Refrigerated display cabinets – Part 1 and 2: Classification, requirements and test conditions has recently been published (BS EN ISO 23953:2023 - Refrigerated display cabinets. Classification, requirements and test conditions).
Following on from this, the standard has just been published in the EU Official Journal (on 11 Sept 2024, OJ L, 2024/2397) meaning that it is now a harmonised standard. Harmonised standards are designed to demonstrate that products, services, or processes comply with relevant EU legislation (in this case energy labelling) and are developed by a recognised standardisation organisation such as CEN, CENELEC, or ETSI. Harmonised standards are created following a request from the European Commission and must be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
EN ISO 23953-2:2023 is the first standard for refrigerated appliances for direct sales (refrigerated display cabinets) to achieve harmonisation. Although use of harmonised standards is voluntary, they provide presumption of conformity with regulations (in this case energy labelling). Energy labelling is a legal requirement for all refrigerated display cabinets sold in Europe and similar legislation exists for the UK.
